The Most Anticipated Upcoming Movies Of 2024

As a lover of the movies, I find myself really excited by all of the incredible movie trailers and previews I've watched recently. With last summer's "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" being released the same day in theaters, there was a feeling that we all were "returning to the movie theaters" post-pandemic. Fast forward a year, and you have arguably one of the most anticipated movies being released in theaters this Friday - Deadpool & Wolverine. I honestly think this movie will break box-office records, as people seem to be really excited to go see it in theaters. That got me thinking - what else am I excited to see the rest of this year? Below are six movies I'm really excited to go see in theaters this year!

Deadpool & Wolverine

Theatrical Release: July 26th, 2024

This might be the most anticipated movie of 2024, and it’s not even close! As of February, Deadpool & Wolverine had the most watched movie trailer of all time! Full disclosure, I’m more of a “Marvel Guy” than a “DC Guy”, so my opinions are slightly biased. I think that the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the MCU, has put out some of the best movies of all time in the last decade, and the highest grossing. We've gotten "Black Panther", "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Avengers: Endgame". Now, we are getting a duo of superheroes that has been decades in the making. Deadpool and Wolverine shared the screen almost 15 years ago, in the movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine". The character Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, got his own movie in 2016. It was a good superhero movie, but also just a great movie in general. What makes Deadpool & Wolverine so anticipated is that we get to (allegedly) see multiple characters from previous cinematic universes, including Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth and Dafne Keen’s X-23. We also get to see the TVA in action again, having last saw them in Loki, Season 2. I anticipate it breaking box-office records, and am really excited to see it in on the big screen!

Trap

Theatrical Release: August 2nd, 2024

For starters, I’m a huge M. Night Shyamalan fan. The “Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable” are two of my all-time favorite movies, and despite some of his recent flops, I feel like Shyamalan is a super interesting move director who isn’t afraid to be daring and different. Since he has had a few not-so-good movies lately, I’m excited to see if “Trap” can be another thriller that matches his earlier work. The movie trailer did exactly what it was supposed to do: got me excited and wanting to see more. It’s also good to see Josh Hartnett having so much success lately, just having been in “Oppenheimer” last year. “Trap” looks like the perfect thriller, and I love that we seemingly get introduced to the bad guy first, as opposed to finding out later in the movie. I have so many questions, and that is why I’m excited to go see this movie when it comes out!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Theatrical Release: September 6th, 2024

As someone who used to work in a movie store in high school and an overall “movie nerd”, I feel like the original Beetlejuice is one of those movies you must watch growing up. If you haven’t seen it or didn’t grow up in the 80’s, stop reading this and go watch it now! Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice, or Betlegeuse as it’s spelled in the movie, is an iconic character in cinematic history. The original had it all – a great cast, including Winona Ryder, Alec Baldwin, Geen Davis and Catherine O’Hara, a great soundtrack from the genius of Danny Elfman and an incredibly talented director in Tim Burton. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” appears to give us more of Michael Keaton, as well as Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe and Danny Devito (a Tim Burton regular)! Hurry up September!!

Joker: Folie à Deux

Theatrical Release: October 4th, 2024

There’s a reason why Joaquin Phoenix won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2020 for portraying Arthur Flek in "Joker". He was INCREDIBLE, and as one famous actress once said, “It’s one of the greatest pieces of acting I’ve ever seen”. I admit, I was a bit skeptical to watch “Joker”, after Heath Ledger’s all-time great portrayal of the character a few years earlier. Not only was “Joker” an incredible movie, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance is now up there on the Mount Rushmore of comic book movie character portrayals. Now, we get the sequel we’ve all been asking for. And, as a bonus, we get to see Lady Gaga on the big screen again! I can’t wait to see how she interprets Harley Quinn in this movie. Also, can we talk about how great this movie trailer is?! The moment at 1:53 with the lipstick on the glass is simply epic. As one YouTuber states, “Whoever came up with the idea of the glass lipstick smile deserves a pay raise… it was just perfect”. Agreed!

Here

Theatrical Release: November 15th, 2024

While this isn’t the flashiest or most well-known movie on this list, I’m still really excited to see it this fall! “Here” reunites Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and Robert Zemeckis, 30 years after collaborating on a little movie called “Forrest Gump”. That’s really the main reason why this is such an anticipated movie for me. Zemeckis is a brilliant movie director, having created films such as “Forrest Gump”, “Cast Away” and the “Back To The Future” Trilogy. Additionally, you really can’t go wrong with Tom Hanks. He is one of the greatest actors in my lifetime, so I’m always excited to see him in a movie. The other thing that makes this movie unique and intriguing is that the entire point of view of the film never changes – it takes place in one living room, but the camera never budges. Also, thanks to cutting edge digital de-aging special effects, we get to see the actors span multiple decades over a lifetime. Can’t wait to see this movie!

Wicked: Part One

Theatrical Release: November 22nd, 2024

I still remember where I was when I first saw this movie trailer. Me and my wife took our kids to see Despicable Me 4, and after the preview, I remember thinking, “this might be the greatest movie trailer I've ever seen”. Now that I’ve watched it about 10 more times, I still think it’s that great. The irony is that I’ve never been a huge “Wicked On Broadway” fan, but this movie looks incredible and will be the perfect holiday season movie to go see in theaters around Thanksgiving! This movie looks like it will be visually stunning, and the music will (hopefully) live up to the high expectations. I’m also excited to see Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz. Goosebump warning: our possible first glimpse of the Land of Oz at moment 2:12 in the trailer. This is a movie you have to see on opening night – can’t wait!!

What movie or movies are you looking forward to seeing? Didn't see a movie on the list that you think should be? Shoot me a message and I'll add it to the next list. See you at the movies!
