Welcome to "The Monday Mention", a weekly feature where I highlight several local businesses in a Dallas/Fort Worth neighborhood or shopping center. There are tons of great restaurants, coffee spots and businesses around the metroplex, so I'll spend some time each week visiting these neighborhoods, interviewing managers and business owners and sharing my favorite experiences in the form of "mentions".
My second Monday Mention is about "Hillside Village", which is a shopping center at the corner of Mockingbird and Abrams in Lakewood, in East Dallas. The shopping center has recently gone through a lot of changes, with new restaurants and shops added in the past few years. I decided to "mention" three personal favorites, but I'll include a list of the other spots at Hillside, as they are equally important and valued by the neighbors!
#1 Palmer's Hot Chicken
Palmer's Hot Chicken is one of our family's "favorite spots" at eat at! The food is great, the location is easy for us and the outdoor covered patio space is ideal for our kids to play! I've known Palmer since they moved to Dallas and I interviewed him for a feature before they opened, which was about 5 years ago! Since then, Palmer's has grown, added to their menu and has even become a prominent feature at the Texas State Fair, which they will be at again this fall! This year, they will be featuring "Russell's Key Lime Pie Bombs", which include a homemade key lime pie mix, graham cracker crust and Nilla Wafers® rolled into bite-sized balls. Then, they are dipped in pancake batter, fried golden, topped with Chantilly cream and powered sugar and served with a sugar-coated lime jelly candy! In addition, they are now serving breakfast!! Breakfast will be served from 8-11 AM on the weekends, and will include Hot Chick-in-Pancake Poppers, Buddy's Banana Pudding Pancakes, huevos rancheros, french toast and chicken and waffles. They also have live team trivia every Tuesday night at 7 PM and live music every Wednesdays starting around 5 or 5:30 PM. Palmer's is open 11 AM - 9 PM on Sunday - Thursday and 11 AM - 9:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.
Other weekly specials include:
Motherclucker Monday - Fried or Grilled Motherclucker Sammich, 1 side and 1 drink for $11
Hot Taco Tuesdays - 2 tacos, 1 side and 1 drink for $11
Wednesdays - Healthy Hump Day - Large house, spinach or caesar salad with grilled or fried chicken and a drink for $11
Taps & Tenders Thursdays - 3 jumbo tenders, 2 sides and a drink for $11
Frose Friday - $5 Frose's
Fried Chicken Sunday - Chicken, 2 sides and a drink for $11
#2 Haystack Burgers & Barley
Because we live right behind Hillside Village, we typically go eat at Haystack twice or three times a month! If you are looking for a really great burger, this is the place to go! They also have amazing salads, sandwiches, fried pickles, onion strings and deserts! One of my all time favorite deserts can be found here: their "Homemade 'Nana Pudding! It's one of the best banana puddings I've ever had, and if you haven't tried it yet, you are missing out! They also have amazing chili and frito pie. The outdoor patio is great for families, and when the weather is nice, it's one of the few outdoor patios that exists in the area! They usually have monthly specials, and currently, they are offering a Fig & Goat Cheeseburger, a Sweet Bacon & Bleu Cheeseburger and Cajun Seasoned Fries! Haystack is open 10:30 - 9 PM on Sunday - Thursday and 10:30 - 10 PM on Friday and Saturdays!
#3 Parlor's Ice Creams
Parlor's opened up shop in Hillside Village in the spring of 2022, and has quickly become a favorite ice cream shop for the surrounding neighborhood! Parlor's describes themselves as a good old fashioned local ice cream shop. They make all their ice cream in house from scratch, and collaborate with local farmers and businesses to source their ingredients for daily and seasonal deserts. They serve ice cream sandwiches, homemade cookies and some of their amazing ice cream flavors include Milk & Cookies, Mint Chip, Brownies A La Mode & Cold Brew. Their latest seasonal flavor is Autumn Pumpkin! In addition, they've recently added a new menu flavor: London Fog! This Earl Grey ice cream is mixed with chunks of their house-made shortbread cookies, and is really delicious! I stopped by today and tried it, and was served by the owner himself: Brandon! Parlor's is open every day from 12 PM - 9 PM!!
Other businesses located in Hillside Village include Chop Shop, Modern Animal (Veterinary Care), Betty Lou, Froggies 5&10, Miller Westby, Session Pilates, Sprouts, Pink Sundays, The Little Things, Sephora, Salon Suites, Rio (Jiu Jitsu), Playtri, Haven, Juice Land, Vie Nail Bar, Chest Tailor, J Hilburn, Massage Heights, Ferrari Orthodontics, The Lash Lounge, Rico’s Shoe Services, Dream Cafe, Hillside Tavern, Susie Cakes, Olivella's Pizza & Wine, F45, Ebby Halliday, Sugared + Bronzed, Face Foundrie, Alchemy 43, Dallas Swim Kids + The Little Gym, Manny’s Tex Mex, White Rock Coffee, Joe’s Cleaners, Boardroom Salon For Men & Pet Bar
