Welcome to "The Monday Mention", a weekly feature where I highlight several local businesses in a Dallas/Fort Worth neighborhood or shopping center. There are tons of great restaurants, coffee spots and businesses around the metroplex, so I'll spend some time each week visiting these neighborhoods, interviewing managers and business owners and sharing my favorite experiences in the form of "mentions".
My latest Monday Mention takes us back to Greenville Avenue, specifically near "Lowest" Greenville. Greenville Avenue has so many restaurants, bars and shops, and is long enough to have different neighborhoods and even names (Lower and Lowest Greenville), so this week, I've focused on 3 spots towards the south end of Greenville Avenue, on the way to downtown. The three spots I've decided include in my Monday Mention are Son Of A Butcher, Fortune House and John's Cafe. Enjoy!!
#1 Son Of A Butcher
This spot is the former home of Char Bar, a beloved institution on Lower Greenville for 50 years. With SOB, the triple-pitched iconic roofline lives on, as do the incredible burgers. This location is open from 11 AM - 10 PM on Monday through Wednesday, 11 AM - 11 PM on Thursday, 10 AM - 12 AM on Fridays and Saturdays and 10 AM - 10 PM on Sundays. My favorite sliders are The Cowboy and The Nashville Hot! The Cowboy slider has pimento cheese, crispy onion straws and a jalapeño cilantro aioli. The Nashville Hot slider has fried chicken, pimento cheese, hot sauce and a pickle. They have $5 Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 3 PM - 6 PM!
#2 Fortune House
While still fairly new to the Dallas food scene, this spot has quickly become one of my all-time favorite restaurants! They are open everyday from 11 AM - 12 AM. They also have a second location in Irving! My favorite things to order are the Sweet & Sour Baby Ribs, the Crispy Garlic Cucumbers and the Mongolian Beef. They also have incredible Soup Dumplings and regular Dumplings. The last time I went, I also got one of their incredible mocktails - the Blackberry Basil Smash. If you haven't been yet, go check it out!
#3 John's Cafe
If you haven't been to John's Cafe, you are missing out! This hole-in-the-wall gem is, hands down, the best breakfast in all of Dallas! John's is open from 7 AM - 2 PM every day, except for Sunday, which is open from 8 AM - 2 PM. It's usually packed, so be prepared to wait for a table to open. My favorite thing to order is the Breakfast Special, which comes with 2 eggs, a choice of ham, bacon or sausage (I choose sausage), hash browns & toast or a biscuit. It's incredible!! For lunch, a popular plate to order is the chicken fried steak! Honestly, they don't have anything that's bad and the service is fast and friendly. You can even catch John, himself, working the cash register from time to time!
Thank you for following my Monday Mentions! Be on the lookout for more great restaurant recommendations and business highlights each week!
