Oran Roberts Elementary: Educating Scholars To Become Productive Global Citizens

Out of the six elementary schools in the Woodrow Wilson High School feeder pattern, I've probably spent the most time at Oran Roberts Elementary. This school holds a special place in my heart due to its circumstances and school demographics. For those who don't know, when I was younger, I worked for the Boy Scouts of America as Professional Scouter. I spent considerable amounts of time in schools and the community, fundraising, recruiting volunteers and most importantly, getting kids excited about joining the Boy Scouts. Most of the elementary schools I visited were Title 1 schools, and most of the student populations were considered "at-risk" and economically disadvantaged. Working closely with those students and teachers shaped how I view the public education system, and is the driving force for why I am so passionate about volunteering my time, resources and money to help schools like Oran Roberts.

When I first met with the principal, Ms. Christa Bayson , the school had an F Cating from the TEA (Texas Education Agency). Last year was her first full year as the principal, and the school was definitely making strides to improve their rating and achieve better results as a campus. Fast forward to the 2024-2025 school year and the school has been awarded a C Rating! Not only have they made great strides academically, the school has great systems and a new culture in place, and is headed in the right direction. One of the biggest reasons the students are finding success is the school implemented a "House System". The kids get to pick their house at the beginning of the the year and it gives them a sense of belonging and within the school and community. Oran Roberts has 4 "Houses" - Onraka, Sollevare, Isibindi & Reveur.

Oran Roberts has been around for 10 years, and partners with the Jubilee Park & Community Center for after school programs and activities for the kids. The school has approx. 350 students. I am fortunate to serve as a Community Member on their SBDM Committee, and am proud of all the school has accomplished this past school year and this fall. Due to a recent fundraising campaign, we were able to raise $885, which has provided two balloon archways for school events and pizza/candy for an upcoming Halloween themed Literacy Night at the school! I am proud to partner with this school to help them achieve their mission of educating scholars to become productive global citizens!
