Over the past school year and summer season, I’ve spent considerable amounts of time at each of the Woodrow Wilson High School feeder pattern schools, contributing my time as a community member and donating money for specific school needs through my East Dallas Equity Initiative program. Out of all the schools, I’ve probably spent the most time and resources at Mount Auburn. This is a special school, and I’m excited to share their story!
After my initial visit and with the principal, Mr. Ernesto Guevara, I got involved with the school’s SBDM (Site-Based Decision Making) Committee and even served as a volunteer at a few school events in the spring! This school has a rich history, dating back to 1922 when the school was built. As part of their Centennial Celebration a few years ago, they got funding for internal and external infrastructure changes, including a new entryway and a secure vestibule that is modern while holding on to that old-school charm that makes the school special.
The school serves approx. 555 students and that number is expected to grow for the upcoming 2025-2026 school year. They consider themselves a true community school, as they partner with organizations like the Samual Grand Rec Center, to offer programs and support to the students. Mount Auburn has a very diverse demographic and make-up, including at-risk students and a large special education population. Because 24% of their students are considered SPED, they are working on becoming more ADA compliant and inclusive throughout the school.
Mount Auburn is a dual-language campus as well as a Dallas ISD Title 1 campus. They offer STEAM programs and opportunities, including science, technology, engineering, art and math. These offerings are critical to the students who attend, as they might not get access to these programs and curriculum otherwise. Their curriculum runs from Pre-K to Fifth Grade, so this school does offer a Pre-School program for those who need it. In the 2025-2026 school year, they will offer a full day Pre-K 3 program, which will also be free for those who meet certain requirements.
I’m really excited to partner with Mount Auburn and see the school grow, thrive and move forward to a bright and exciting future. Mustang Pride!
